Apongbon Inferno: Lagos Government Shuts Down Eko-Bridge

Lagos State Government has shut Eko Bridge, Lagos Island indefinitely over an inferno that gutted some shops under the bridge at Apongbon on Wednesday morning, which badly affected the strength of the bridge.

The government also has issued a 48 hours quit notice to owners and occupants of temporary shop structures and container shops under the bridge.

The Permanent Secretary, Lagos State Emergency Management Authority, LASEMA, Dr. Femi Oke-Osanyintolu, announced the development while reacting to the unfortunate fire incident.

“The bridge has also been closed pending when integrity and Environmental Impact Assessment, EIA, is conducted on the bridge to determine the level of public safety.”

However, giving an update on the fire incident, the Director of Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service, Margaret Adeseye, said the situation had been brought under control.

According to Adeseye, the fire service received a distress call at 03:14 wee hours on Wednesday.

She explained, “The intensity of the fire has badly affected the Eko bridge disrupting movement along that corridor...

“The nature of the fire is disastrous as all Emergency responders are on top of the situation.

“There has been no reported case of injury or death while fire-fighters combat the fire.”

The inferno caused a traffic jam that left many road users stranded. Some car owners took to trekking as vehicular movements were grounded.
