OAU VC Crisis: Oyetola Sues for Peace

By Adeolu Adegbaju Osun State The Governor of the State of Osun, Gboyega Oyetola, has enjoined aggrieved Ile-Ife indigenes who are protesting against the emergence of Professor Adebayo Simeon Bamire as the new Vice-Chancellor of Obafemi Awolowo University to allow peace reign and stop the protest immediately. Gboyega Oyetola made the plea in a statement issued by his Chief Press Secretary, Ismail Omipidan, on Tuesday, 22nd March 2022. He noted that though the State has no role in the choice of who becomes Vice-Chancellor being a Federal Institution, he has a responsibility for the safety and security of the Institution and its workers as the host governor. He urged all protesting citizens to exercise restraint and allow peace to reign. Apongbon Inferno: Lagos Government Shuts Down Eko-Bridge

By Adeolu Adegbaju  Lagos State Lagos State Government has shut Eko Bridge, Lagos Island indefinitely over an inferno that gutted some shops under the bridge at Apongbon on Wednesday morning, which badly affected the strength of the bridge. The government also has issued a 48 hours quit notice to owners and occupants of temporary shop structures and container shops under the bridge. The Permanent Secretary, Lagos State Emergency Management Authority, LASEMA, Dr. Femi Oke-Osanyintolu, announced the development while reacting to the unfortunate fire incident. “The bridge has also been closed pending when integrity and Environmental Impact Assessment, EIA, is conducted on the bridge to determine the level of public safety.” However, giving an update on the fire incident, the Director of Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service, Margaret Adeseye, said the situation had been brought under control. Ife Indigenes Protest OAU VC Origin

 By Adeolu Adegbaju  Ile-Ife, Osun State The indigenes of Ile-Ife are protesting the origin of the incoming Vice-Chancellor, Professor Adebayo Simeon Bamire of Faculty of Agriculture, Obafemi Awolowo University, a native of Oyan, Osun State, Monday, 21st March 2022. Women of Osun Osogbo worshippers were seen on OAU Campus chanting and praying. The protest is a result of the Council's appointment of the next Vice-Chancellor of OAU. The current Vice-Chancellor, Professor Eyitope Ogunbodede's tenure will end on 7th June 2022, after which Professor Bamire will take over as the new Vice-Chancellor of Obafemi Awolowo University.   By Adeolu Adegbaju Ile-Ife, Osun State.  The Governing Council of Obafemi Awolowo University has announced the appointment of Professor Adebayo Simeon Bamire from the Faculty of Agriculture as the new Vice-Chancellor of Obafemi Awolowo University, on Thursday, 17th March 2022, via a press release from the Pro-Chancellor and Chairman of Council, Obafemi Awolowo University, Osun Nigeria.   The Pro-Chancellor and Chairman of Council, Owelle Oscar Idoko, said the appointment of the new Vice-Chancellor takes effect from 7th June 2022. Professor Adebayo Simeon Bamire, a Professor of Agricultural Economics, was among the 20 applicants who showed interest in leading Obafemi Awolowo University by applying for the Vice-Chancellorship position as advertised by the Council that will become vacant 7th June 2022. Street Urchin Wins Chess In Slum Competition

 By Adeolu Adegbaju Oshodi, Lagos Fawaz Adeoye is a nineteen-year-old boy who came from Aiyegun Ibadan, Oyo State. Fawaz came to Lagos a year ago, having no relative and a place to lay his head, he opted for Oshodi bridge in Lagos. There he lived and earned his living. Fawaz doesn't have proficiency in English but he is determined not to let that be a barrier to achieving his dreams.  He was fortunate to be among a number of boys who also live under Oshodi bridges that were taught chess by the convener of Chess in Slum, Tunde Onakoya, and the tournament director, Samson, also known as Zlatan. The boys were taught chess for two weeks after which a competition was held and Fawaz emerged as the winner of the competition.
